Ankle Joint Replacement, also known as Ankle Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure for severe ankle arthritis. Arthritis can be due to overuse or traumatic injuries that cause damage to the cartilage and leads to severe stiffness, pain and disability. In the past, the primary treatment was an ankle fusion which results in restriction of motion and shifts stress to adjacent joints.
Ankle Arthroplasty removes the arthritic joint and replaces it with an artificial implant. The goal is to restore motion but most importantly relieve pain in people suffering from debilitating arthritis.
